Lewis Hamilton claimed a long-awaited and record-breaking ninth British Grand Prix victory in a thrilling race at Silverstone on Sunday.

The Mercedes driver overcame a 10-second penalty for a first-lap collision with title rival Max Verstappen to take the lead on lap 39 and hold on for a famous victory.

Hamilton's win was his first since the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in December and moves him to within six points of Verstappen in the drivers' standings.

Verstappen, who started from pole position, finished second, with Ferrari's Carlos Sainz Jr. completing the podium.

The race was full of drama, with several safety cars and a red flag period, but Hamilton was ultimately able to control the pace and take the victory.
